Kariakoo Guide

New to sourcing from Kariakoo Market? Here's how it's laid out, how to buy with confidence even if you've never set foot in Dar es Salaam, and how TafutaChimbo fits in.

Kariakoo Guide

What is Kariakoo Market?

Kariakoo is Dar es Salaam's largest wholesale and retail market — a dense grid of dozens of named streets right in the city centre, each one packed with shops. Traders and shoppers come from across Tanzania, and increasingly from neighbouring countries, to buy in bulk at prices that are hard to match anywhere else.

The market is organised street by street rather than as a single building, so different streets tend to cluster similar goods — electronics on one, textiles and fabric on another, hardware and general goods further along, and so on. That's exactly what TafutaChimbo's street map is built to help you navigate.

If you can't visit in person — whether you're sourcing from elsewhere in Tanzania or from abroad — TafutaChimbo lets you browse real Kariakoo shops, see what they stock, and reach them directly, without needing to be there.
